🗣 Finding rest in the stress
How I never burn out and continue working on my music career
I’m at the gym again writing this newsletter on my phone, so I have time later to edit videos to push my music.
I’m squeezing out every ounce of free time I have to keep up with my content schedule. It doesn’t help that I was sick for two months either.
Creating can be demanding.
So much content to make. So little time.
In a perfect world, I would focus on two things: my music and enjoying life.
Here's what I do to keep my peace and bring rest to my stressful schedule.
Habits Around Rest
There are so many productivity gurus who encourage forming habits around work but never include habits around rest for your routine
If I don’t do this, I’ll just keep working until I can’t anymore. And I’m not going to make myself burn out and disappear for a year again.
It starts with my weekly planner.
Once a week, I schedule time to watch a movie. I even include an optional task to write my thoughts about it afterward, so I still feel productive.
I grew up with a strict family who didn’t believe in fun. I’m still working on it. I promise.
I remind myself to be grateful with meditation, writing down the good happening in my life, and keeping track of progress — newsletter subscribers, the amount of songs I worked on this month, anything to look back on and remind myself WHY I need rest. It helps remove the guilt I always feel with lying around.
“Hey, you made 5 new songs ideas this week. Maybe you DO deserve this break so you can keep doing the good work you’re doing.”
Self-care during this resting period is different for everyone, but for me, it’s showering, cutting my nails, or shaving. It’s free, and it gives me that little pat on the back every time I need it.
Pick up the phone and call someone, hang out, or go outside. Break your boring schedule and give yourself the permission to do what you want today. Explore somewhere new, or go somewhere familiar with a new perspective you haven’t visited in a while.
Do that thing you love. What did you just imagine after reading that? Do it. I practice new skills, or if I really don’t care that day, I keep making more music even when I have more important things to do.
Whenever I feel overwhelmed or think I’m stuck in the cycle of content creation, doing these activities helps me stop feeling stressed. I stop feeling trapped, and I remember that this is my life and I have a choice on how to live it.
Purposely schedule time to take breaks and prioritize your well-being.
